On Wednesday 18th June 2025, the Mayor of Lewisham, Brenda Dacres, joined guests from across the local health and care system and community, to officially launch The Waldron Health Centre and Community Hub in New Cross.

The event, which marked the completion of large-scale refurbishments and the opening of the Community Hub, offered a chance for partners and service users to celebrate the investment in the site and progress made so far in delivering enhanced health and care services to residents.

Guests enjoyed celebratory music from Red Ribbon Living Well, a community organisation supporting individuals affected by, and living with HIV, and monologues delivered by community theatre group Broken Hearted Youth Ltd, both of whom host regular free-to-access sessions to residents at the new Community Hub.

The Waldron Health Centre was built in 2008 to offer residents a range of integrated health and social care services. It quickly became a vital part of the community, offering GP surgeries, pharmacy, contraception and sexual health clinics, dentistry and a variety of community services to enhance physical and mental wellbeing.

Over the last 18 months, the Waldron Health Centre has received an investment of £2.3m to improve the space and has undergone significant change to remodel and update the building. Improvements delivered include:

  • Increased clinical and health space: works included creating a new reception area, more clinical space to support the delivery of a wider range of services, and an interview room for medical appointments.
  • A new community hub: situated on the ground floor, the hub is a welcoming space for all, where residents can access local health and care services, find the information and advice they need to support their own health and wellbeing, and connect with their community and friends. The community space has been made freely available for voluntary, community, and social enterprise (VCSE) groups to run health-supporting activities and engage with residents, based on local health priorities.
  • Improved facilities and a better integration of health services: improvements were made to heating and ventilation systems, toilets, windows and doors to deliver better facilities for staff and visitors alike. The remodelling works enhanced the layout, ensuring the building now flows from one space into the next, improving the integration of different health and social care services throughout the building.

The Waldron Health Centre development was delivered under the NHS LIFT Programme which brings together Community Health Partnerships (a key part of the NHS family), alongside health investor Fulcrum. The improvement works at the Waldron were delivered by a range of key partners including South East London Integrated Care System, Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust, North Lewisham Primary Care Network and One Health Lewisham.

Mayor of Lewisham, Brenda Dacres said: “The Waldron has been a real cornerstone of our community since it opened in 2008, bringing lots of health and social care services together under one roof. Today’s a special moment—not just for the building itself, but for all of us who care about health, wellbeing, and community here in Lewisham.”

Dr Neil Goldbourne, Chief Strategy and Transformation Officer & Deputy CEO Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust (LGT) said: “I’m really delighted to celebrate the relaunch of the Waldron Community Hub. LGT has over 100 colleagues who call the Waldron home and we are proud to provide many of our Lewisham community services, including midwifery, district nursing and diabetes care, from the Hub. The redevelopment is a great example of collaboration and partnership, with all us tenants working together to ensure that we could keep services running for patients while the works were carried out. The result is this thriving neighbourhood community hub that hosts health and care services as well a wide variety of much-needed and well-loved community groups.”

Ceri Jacob, Place Executive Lead for Lewisham NHS said: “We’re proud of the progress made at the Waldron Health Centre, which is now fully equipped to offer a wide range of health and care services to residents. The addition of the Community Hub is an important step in providing more holistic neighbourhood care in Lewisham.”

Eugene Prinsloo, Developments Director, Community Health Partnerships said: “I’m delighted to see the improvement project at the Waldron Health Centre is now complete. Through collaborative working across both private and NHS partners the refurbishment has transformed healthcare provision in borough, enabling a more streamlined and integrated approach to addressing the needs of the local population.”

Ian Butterworth, Head of Strategy and Projects, Fulcrum said: “The Waldron already serves as a vital part of the local community and these improvements will offer another huge boost to the health and wellbeing of residents. As the NHS looks to shift more care into the community, the Waldron is a thriving example of how partnership working and investment in improved neighbourhood health facilities can support the changing health and social care needs of local people.”
