A recent leadership support visit by Benny Okpor, Social Care Nursing Clinical Practice Development Lead for SE London ICS to Ashgreen House care home in Woolwich, revealed it to be an outstanding example of how meaningful investment in staff support, development and recognition is enabling both the care team and residents to thrive.

What was intended to be a routine visit with the registered nurse and the wider care team, left a lasting positive impression on her – later describing what she had seen and experienced as a “model of compassionate care and management”. Highlighting standout examples of the excellence at Ashgreen House, Benny said:

Inspirational leadership at the core: “At the centre of the home’s success is manager Lenka, whose journey from kitchen staff to home manager reflects dedication and opportunity within the organisation. Her leadership emphasises trust, personal growth and staff wellbeing, creating a supportive and valued team culture.”

Investing in talent from within: “The home’s “grow our own” philosophy encourages staff to pursue training and development, with internal progression central to workforce planning. One team member is completing an apprenticeship top-up to qualify as a registered nurse, fully sponsored by Sanctuary Care.”

Thoughtful recognition and staff support: “A culture of appreciation is embedded in daily practice. Personalised birthday cards are sent to staff, and daily flash meetings bring together clinical, catering, activities and maintenance teams to reinforce collaboration. Colleagues also mark life milestones together, strengthening team cohesion.”

Celebrating achievement and community: “Monthly staff meetings recognise individuals as “Most Hardworking” and “Most Caring,” while annual events foster community. Staff organise a Christmas party for their children, and Sanctuary Care supports festive celebrations for residents.”

Championing diversity and cultural inclusion: “Major religious festivals are celebrated, reflecting the diversity of staff and residents. Monthly Cultural Cooking Days promote understanding through international cuisines.”

Strong clinical governance: “The home maintains robust professional standards, with a supervision framework that supports wellbeing, reflective practice and continuous improvement.”

Benny added: “Ashgreen House is a powerful example of what can be achieved through strong leadership, cultural inclusivity, and genuine investment in staff development. It is vital we share their approach and learning – and that of other similar trailblazers, as we work to strengthen and improve the delivery of social care across the system for both residents and staff.
