This year, the 13th May 2024 to Friday 17th May marked Green NHS Week.
To celebrate, the London Greener NHS team hosted several sessions across the week for healthcare staff to gain an understanding of the NHS sustainability agenda, meet sustainability experts working with the NHS and hear from Trusts who have benefited from sustainability projects.
The aims of the week were to:
Greener NHS Week saw over 500 virtual attendees, including many from across the south east London ICS, who attended 37 different bite-sized sustainability sessions. The sessions also featured several speakers from across south east London, who talked about topics such as food waste management in Guys and St Thomas Hospitals, greener inhaler prescribing in secondary and primary care, mental health and neurocognitive impact of climate change, and reduction of nitrous oxide waste at King’s College Hospital, which resulted in an annual saving of approximately £25,000.
Tangible examples of sustainability in action were promoted for attendees to exchange ideas and identify opportunities to adopt the same greener practices in their own organisations. Attendees also valued the opportunity to network with colleagues working across the NHS in London and nationally.
All session recordings are now live on the London Future NHS Platform: Future NHS – Greener NHS Knowledge Hub – London Greener NHS
