Health and care professionals, social prescribers and community group leaders from across Lewisham came together last month for a Creative Health and Social Prescribing Network Meeting, celebrating the role of the arts in improving health and wellbeing.

Hosted by Community Connections Lewisham in partnership with Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, the event explored how creative activities can support people’s physical and mental health, strengthen social connections and enhance quality of life.

The afternoon featured a lively mix of taster sessions, talks and networking opportunities. Participants took part in a short creative workshop led by Trinity Laban, before hearing from a range of local organisations including The Albany, Lewisham Local, and Ageing Well. Each showcased their community-based creative groups – from low-cost arts sessions for over 60s to local choirs and crafts groups that bring residents together.

Flora Faith Kelley, NHS Creative Health Lead for South East London, shared insights into the growing Creative Health framework, which helps social prescribers and healthcare professionals identify suitable creative activities for their patients and track referrals more effectively.

A group discussion followed, highlighting the benefits of creative health in building confidence, reducing isolation, and supporting recovery, as well as exploring the challenges of referring into these services. The session concluded with refreshments, informal networking, and an optional tour of the Trinity Laban Building, one of Lewisham’s leading creative health hubs.

Elaine Egan, Community Connections Lewisham Project Manager and organiser of the event said “we had a tremendous positive response for the session. We used the opportunity to showcase some examples of Creative Health in the area, share the new Creative Health directory in the council and networking. The room was full of positive energy. Huge thanks to Laura, Poppy and Natasha and the Trinity Laban College for hosting the event.”

The event marked another step forward in Lewisham’s ambition to connect residents with creative, accessible and community-based opportunities that support wellbeing and inclusion.
