Lewisham residents came together last week for a free community event aimed at understanding and managing high blood pressure. The “Understanding High Blood Pressure” session took place on Wednesday 22 October 2025 at Forest Hill Pools, offering residents practical guidance and expert advice.
Attendees had the opportunity to have their blood pressure checked, learn how to monitor it themselves and understand what readings are considered normal. The event also provided valuable advice on diet, exercise and lifestyle changes that can help keep blood pressure under control.
Participants were able to speak directly with healthcare professionals, ask questions and connect with others managing high blood pressure. Refreshments were provided, creating a welcoming environment for all attendees.
Jonathan McInerny, Head of Long Term Conditions and Cancer said “Hypertension or High Blood Pressure is a very common and ‘hidden’ disease that many people get diagnosed with late as there are often no obvious symptoms. However, the effects of prolonged high blood pressure can lead to health complications, such as a higher risk of heart attack or stroke. This event brought together all the key local players to raise awareness of high blood pressure and how to control it. Feedback from those who attended the event has shown that people really appreciated the time given to this subject – we will be holding more public events on hypertension early next year in Deptford and Lewisham.”
An attendee also fed back that the event “far exceeded expectations – whole event, well informative, well presented, questions answered, learnt a lot”. Another attendee also commented that the event was “well organised – good to see different topics covered”.
For anyone looking to take control of their blood pressure, simple steps such as regular monitoring, staying active and eating a balanced diet can make a real difference. Residents can also speak to their GP or visit NHS resources to find support and guidance.
Plans to duplicate this event in other locations across the borough are underway.
