A new scholarship has been launched by the Florence Nightingale Foundation, in partnership with the Jabali Men’s Network, in the memory of Oxleas NHS Foundation Trust colleague Francis Adzinku.
This scholarship celebrates the nurse, the leader and the friend that Francis was to so many throughout his career. Francis’ mentoring and leadership role extended beyond the boundaries of our organisation.
He was a founder member of Mental Health Educators in the Diaspora, an international volunteering initiative made up of mental health clinicians committed to advancing and raising the profile of mental health education in Ghana and other countries in the West African sub-region.
In 2020, with a small number of colleagues, he was one of the founding members of the Jabali Men’s Network, a network of senior male nurses from African, Asian and Caribbean backgrounds, the aim of which is to support, develop, and inspire future generations.
Oxleas Chief Executive, Dr Ify Okocha, welcomed the development. “This scholarship is a fitting testament to the leadership and inspiration Francis showed throughout his career,” he said. “We are delighted to see it being launched and hope it will support the next generation of nurse leaders.”
The Jabali Men’s Network will provide individual mentorship and a ready network of supportive colleagues for the successful applicant. The Jabali Men’s Network is sponsored by the Chief Nursing Officer for England, Dame Ruth May, who will provide the successful applicant with an individual mentoring session during their scholarship year.
This scholarship is open to male nurses of a Global Majority background. An interest in mental health would be desirable but not essential. Potential applicants must be able to demonstrate their commitment and aspiration to progress into a senior leadership role in nursing.
The panel will be looking for an applicant with great potential as a senior leader who leads with the same great compassion that Francis embodied.
The application period closes on 27 January 2023.
