A recent webinar hosted by the South East London Integrated Care Board highlighted the urgent need to address the declining rates of childhood vaccinations in Lambeth and Southwark. The event, featuring a panel of experts, aimed to provide valuable insights into vaccines, local healthcare challenges, and effective strategies for engaging parents and caregivers. With rising cases of measles, traces of polio found, and increased flu hospitalizations among children, it is crucial to improve immunization rates as soon as possible.

The webinar stressed the critical role of vaccinations in protecting public health. Worryingly, one in four children under five years of age in Lambeth and Southwark are either unvaccinated or not fully vaccinated. This poses a serious risk of outbreaks and further health problems. By ensuring children and young people catch up on their vaccination schedules, we can reduce these risks and prevent the spread of diseases that can be prevented by vaccines.

Healthcare professionals, both clinical and non-clinical, play a vital role in addressing vaccine hesitancy among parents, caregivers, and children. By understanding their concerns, creating a comfortable environment, and prioritizing the health of their children, healthcare professionals can have a significant impact on vaccination rates. The webinar emphasized the importance of engaging in meaningful conversations and using behavioural science strategies to build trust and dispel misconceptions about vaccines.

During the interactive event, participants had the opportunity to gain practical advice from the expert panel. The discussions covered various topics, including different vaccines, associated health risks, and the latest data on under-vaccinated groups in the borough. Attendees were encouraged to ask questions, share challenges, and contribute their ideas. This collaborative approach aimed to equip healthcare professionals with the tools and knowledge needed to effectively address vaccine hesitancy.
