Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust
The Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust Green Plan will deliver the trust’s commitment to a greener future, aligned with the Government’s ‘three big shifts’ outlined in the 10 Year Health Plan for England: hospital to community, analogue to digital, sickness to prevention.
This will be made through a co-ordinated approach, including:
- Delivering home appointments and remote care to reduce emissions from travel
- Implementing digital tools that help staff make the best clinical decisions and reduce emissions
- Helping staff and patients to walk, wheel and cycle and choose increasingly plant-based diets
- Improving the air that we breathe to prevent and manage illnesses
- Championing the health benefits of access to nature by transforming our green spaces.

Oxleas NHS Foundation Trust
The Oxleas NHS Foundation Trust Green Plan define the trust’s commitment to sustainable development, with a primary focus on environmental sustainability and a drive towards the NHS’ Net Zero targets.
Key outcomes of the plan include:
- Ensuring the Trust is aligned to the NHS-wide ambition to become the world’s first healthcare system to reach net-zero carbon emissions.
- Prioritising interventions that simultaneously improve patient care and community wellbeing while tackling climate change and broader sustainability issues
- Taking a strategic approach that makes evidenced-based capital investments whilst increasing efficiencies
- Reducing waste and pollution and helping to create and maintain green spaces, to support improvement of the physical and mental health of staff, patients and the wider community
- Adapting to the unavoidable changes to our climate to avoid disruption to Oxleas’ ability to deliver outstanding care to the community
Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust
The Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust Green Plan sets out a prioritised set of high-impact actions that are measurable and deliver reductions in carbon emissions, as well as financial and social benefits.
Objectives of the trust plan include:
- Embedding sustainability into everyday clinical behaviours and decision making across the trust; prioritising changes that improve both patient outcomes and environmental impact
- Supporting staff to take part in green initiatives and offering clear opportunities for those who want to lead or contribute to sustainability projects
- Transitioning to a modern, energy-efficient built environment that supports better care and reducing emissions from heating and electricity across the hospital estate
- Improving recycling rates and waste segregation practices to reduce environmental impact
- Reducing reliance on single-use items; particularly in clinical areas where safe reusable alternatives exist
- Reduce avoidable food waste and embedding sustainability into catering and procurement decisions
- Using digital tools to reduce emissions and improve efficiency across clinical pathways and implementing low-energy digital services and functions
- Embedding sustainability and social value as core principles in procurement and contract management, including supporting local suppliers to align with net zero goals
- Supporting staff to make active travel choices, including improving access to low or zero-emission transport options across all sites
South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust
The South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust Green Plan includes tailored actions to reduce the environmental impact of the trust’s activities. These actions will contribute to broader sustainability ambitions and mirror the trust’s long-term commitment to improving their sustainability performance and more efficient use of resources.
Goals of the Green Plan include:
- Embedding sustainability across all Trust activities, processes, and behaviours, while actively involving staff in the process.
- Building greater resilience to climate change into trust services
- Developing and reviewing initiatives to work towards decarbonising the estate by 2040
- Enhancing the local environment, preventing local pollution, protecting wildlife corridors and developing green spaces
- Moving towards sustainable medicine practices, including the use of environmentally friendly inhalers
- Improving staff and patient experience by moving to more sustainable workplace practices
- Reducing the environmental impact of the goods and services used at the Trust; improving waste segregation and sourcing low carbon alternatives to single-use products
- Promoting sustainable travel across the trust to help reduce fleet emissions and contributing to air quality improvement
